Remote Working in the Public Sector Remote working in the public sector is accelerating, but still lags behind levels being achieved within private companies. In association with public sector consultancy, Governetz, Henley conducted research amongst 54 central and 31 local government orqanisations covering over 300,000 staff. Although the survey confirmed an official policy in place to support teleworking, take-up was comparatively low, ranging from nil to a high of 13%. On average just 4% of public sector staff worked remotely ? on an occasional basis or full-time -when the survey was conducted in April 2005. However, every government body questioned volunteered that teleworking had improved staff motivation and morale, while lowering absence through sickness. Productivity either remained constant or increased. Importantly, the part that teleworking can play in helping to meet the £24m savings target promised by the Lyons Relocation Report was widely recognised. The Henley team was involved at the 2005 Public Sector Relocation Summit in London. At this event, it was clear that within the public sector, personal office buildings have an important role to play: Henley deploy and manage a fleet of their buildings for larger organisations.
